ateneAnafiotika is a small neighborhood, very unique, literally leaning against the rock of the Acropolis of Athens, which resembles in all respects an island of the Cyclades. Its name is due to the fact that it was built by workers from the island of Anafi that came to Athens in order to work as constructor workers in the refurbishment of King Othon’s Palace in the middle of 1800.

Athens, AnafiotikaAthens, AnafiotikaDifficult to get there by chance, the best way to find the entrance is coming from the side of Acropolis museum and taking the road that passes near the entrance of the theater of Dionysus. After the climb you come to a church, St. George’s on the Rock that’s pretty much the door that suddenly leads you in another dimension. Although there are only 45 houses it is easy to get lost in the labyrinth of alleys and stairs. It’s hard to believe you’re in the heart of a metropolis, but every so spectacular views of the city remind us. And then there are the cats, lots of cats, as on the islands…

Going down towards Plaka, you will meet the Metochion of the Holy Sepulchre, a monastery of 1600, which is worth a visit, before you get to the classic bars and restaurants.
