vaiWe left Xirokambos with a heavy heart. Heading north but not in the mood yet to deal with the crowds, we decided to ‘skip’ for the time being the world famous palm beach of Vai and to stop in Itanos just 2 km further. The area is also known as Erimoupolis which means Desert City. It isn’t deserted of course but comparing to the bustling Vai it almost seems so. Great beaches, free access to the ancient ruins and even palm trees. This is our place!

Crete: Xerokambos, what a place!

zakrosWhile thousands of tourists struggle to find a place to lay their towel in the world-famous beaches of West Crete (Balos, Elafonissi), on the opposite end of the island there is something strange (though marvelous) happening. The beaches of Xerokambos with their crystal clear, turquoise waters are crowd-free! Its beauty and tranquility make this remote area the appropriate place to spend a few days relaxing by the sea.

Crete: Matala and flower children

matalaMatala has remained famous for its hippy past and for having hosted during its glory years, celebrities such as Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell. Location, climate and its famous caves, were perfect for those who wanted to live in freedom. Today, more than 40 years later, you can still see around some original flower child and the atmosphere has kept something special and positive.
