Euboea, the mysterious dragon houses

eubea_kallianouWe linger a little longer in the hinterland of Southern Euboea to discover more wonders hidden in the mountains. This time it was the turn of the enigmatic “dragon houses”. These megalithic, archaic constructions known as drakospita  are scattered throughout the central and southern part of the island. We visited the group of Palli-Laka which is easily accessible from Styra and we’ve been fairly impressed!

Euboea, Karystos. Columns and ramparts

eubea_sudThe strong wind blew away our desire to hang around the beach. Instead of suffering next to the stormy sea, we decided to visit the Venetian fortress which stands on a hill above the town of Karystos and also, weather permitting, to explore the Roman quarries situated further up the mountain Ochi. This place was famous since antiquity for its particular, colorful marble and still has a kind of mystic atmosphere. Definitely worth the hike!

Euboea, far south

eubea_sudWe decided to go to Euboea literally at the last minute and, as if that was not enough, during peak season, the second week of August! It turned out to be the best choice. This so far ‘off the tourist radar’ island has endless beaches with sapphire-blue water and plenty of space to enjoy wild camping. Although we had planned to explore the entire island, we managed to check out only the south and a part of the center. There are good reasons to return!
