Another worthwhile excursion starting from Sougia is the hike of the gorge of Agia Irini. A seven kilometers path, easy and with excellent facilities to make the walk more enjoyable. Also in this case it is a great workout and lite resistance test before going for the Samaria Gorge.

We soon discover that from Sougia you can go take some interesting, shorter and less demanding hikes than the Samaria Gorge. So we decide to test our physical condition by first making a visit to the archaeological site of Ancient Lissos. A relatively easy walk, on the E4 path, that takes a couple of hours round trip,

We go to Sougia with the intention of using it only as a base to hike the Samaria Gorge, having read that as a place it does not have much to offer. Instead we stayed four days and we left with a feeling of melancholy… the feeling of freedom I had in Sougia was something long forgotten to me.
