Olympia, the birthplace of a great idea

Olimpia
olympia_epitalioOlympia needs no introductions. Is not by chance one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece and although its magic is a bit ruined by the rhythms of the tourism industry, is absolutely the place to see.

OlimpiaThinking about the place where the first Olympic games were played, it is easy to imagine it as a huge stadium. Indeed there is a stadium in Olympia, but it is only a small part of the site and also the least interesting. It is the remains of all the other buildings, the greenery and the nature around them to make your visit an experience not to be missed.

OlimpiaThe entry site + museum costs € 9 (or € 6 for one of the two). The summer timetable is from Monday to Friday 8-20 and 8-15 on Saturday and Sunday, in winter it’s 8-15 every day. The overnight stay in Olympia is not recommended, the police here, more than in other places, seems to work at the service of campsites. We slept along one of the main streets [N 37.643083, E 21.626267], where there was no ban, but perhaps it is better to choose a place on the sea.

Please note that the museum opens on Mondays at 10.00 and closes at 17.00 in summer and 15.00 in winter.
