Shopping… or what to bring from home

In large supermarkets like AB Vasilopoulos, Carrefour, Masoutis, Lidl etc.. you can find almost everything. Imported products tend to be a little more expensive, but not so much to justify bring tons of supplies from home. At leas compared to Italy, the only thing that is worth carrying are coffee and pasta that in Greece can have double the price.

Fruits and vegetables are good in Greece. You can buy them fresh daily from various little shops. As you will notice, the prices are not very different from those of the supermarket. Among other things in all the resorts and often even in the most remote villages, mini markets are conveniently open late (sometimes even after midnight).

Cheese and dairy products are also good, indeed some are exceptional. Is not by chance that Greek yogurt and Feta cheese have become famous throughout the world. As always it is worthwhile to ask to taste the local cheese, it could be a surprise!

For breakfast there are a myriad of packaged biscuits, croissants, cereals etc.. but bakeries deserve a visit too. You will find various cakes, biscuits and various sweet and salty treats that deserve a separate post.

Being a vegetarian for almost 30 years, I can not give advice on meat products. If someone more knowledgeable than me want to comment and add information, he is welcome to do so.

Beside food, the only thing that comes to my mind are books. You can find a good selection of English language books in most places. For other languages the choice is not so great so it’s better to bring with you enough printed paper to cover your needs.. then of course there are Kindles… 🙂

bombolettaImportant! In Greece you cannot find gas cylinders of the German type 5 Kg (10lt). Until a few months ago it was possible, if you had the right adapter, to fill your cylinder at GPL stations, now it has been forbidden and it is not possible anymore. Keep it in mind if your motorhome is equipped with this type of cylinders.

I’m sure I forgot to mention a lot of things. I will keep updating this post as I will have information to add.
