Colmar: you’ll never get enough of Alsace

France, Alsace, Colmar
europe_franceThe old town of Colmar is a real gem. Alsatian architecture, a network of waterways that make it even more characteristic, an impressive Gothic church and wine and food at will. In addition Colmar prides itself on being the birthplace of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the Statue of Liberty and the sculptor of the lion of Belfort.

France, Alsace, ColmarColmar is located about 65 kilometers south of Strasbourg and less than 20km from the Rhine, the border with Germany. In addition to being a city definitely worth visiting, it has a special feature that makes it a particularly interesting destination it is driest city in France. France, Alsace, ColmarIn almost all car parks close to the city center there are clear prohibitions for motorhomes though, as you can see in the photo, there is always someone who doesn’t cares. In fact, there are no major problems finding a spot a few hundred meters away from the center, as long as it is not in the peak of the tourist season, such as during the Christmas holidays.
France, Alsace, ColmarIn most central car parks there are signs that warn to beware of thieves… not very reassuring… 🙁
France, Alsace, ColmarFor those who do not want to walk much, this is one of the parkings for motorhomes available to visit the center [48.08352,7.35522]. It has no services, is close to downtown and costs 3€/hour for up to 4 hours.
France, Alsace, ColmarOne solution for safety is to park at the camper stop at the Port de Plaisance [48.08047,7.375945], guarded, it has all services and costs 11/15 € depending on the season. The only drawback: it is located about two kilometers from the historic center.
France, Alsace, ColmarWe were lucky, as usual ;). We found one of the very few free parking areas, with no bans and just steps from covered market. [48.07478,7.36169]
In any case, another good solution is to spend the night in nearby villages, better equipped for motorhomes and make day-trips to Colmar.
