The coast from Astakos to Lefkada

Marathias
messo_lefkaI continue my way up to Igoumenitsa following the sea road. In this post I present a couple of interesting stopover spots and a camper stop along the stretch of coast, about 80 kilometers long, between Astakos and Lefkada.

MarathiasOnly 5 km after exiting Astakos and taking the road along the coast, you will come across the small bay of Marathias [N 38.507475, E 21.030855]. The beach is not great and we found it also quite dirty, but… the sea is just marvelous and the feeling I had is that this is one of those places where you can put down roots and stay for as long as you want without anyone to disturb you…

MitikasAnother four kilometers and we reach the the beach of Mitikas [N 38.67362, E 20.97122], more than three kilometers long, opposite the island of Kalamos. Here you can comfortably stay for free and enjoy the sea.

A second option as a stopover in Mitikas is the parking beside the dock [N 38.670702, E 20.95089].

close to mitikas 1After Mitikas, heading north there are several semi-deserted beaches, where you can easily stop for a swim, but almost all parkings are right on the street and are not much suitable for an overnight stop.

Lefkada, Gyra beachLefkada, Gyra beachFurther along the coast, we passed Paleros and Pogonia, where it is evident that motorhomes are not welcome, but there is not much to be missed anyway. We went on following the road that passes by Steno, which means ‘tight’ and expresses very well the concept and then Plagia, with beautiful views of the Strait of Lefkada. Unfortunately it was already late and I have not been able to photograph … however in the end we got to the the beach of Gyra in Lefkada [N 38.85077, E 20.68761] where we found a wonderful beach, with a wonderful sea and a delegation of RVs from almost all European countries.
One note: towards the end of the beach, close to the mills, they put horizontal bars to prevent access to motorhomes, entry is possible from the north-east side.
