+Fokianos, shhh don’t tell anyone

fokianos 00
fokianosFokianos is a beautiful beach. Until a few years ago it was possible to reach it only by boat, now a paved road gets to till one kilometer from what for many could be heaven … splendid sea, sun, peace and the mobile has no signal! 🙂

panoramicamarespiaggia inglesibivio33 km south of Leonidio lies Fokianòs beach. It is out of the classic itineraries and it makes sense to go there only if you intend to stay for a few days. If you like the sea and beaches not too crowded, it’s really worth it.
There are two tavernas on the beach with decent prices, decent food and a lot of sympathy, that are the reference point for all campers and motorhomers. “Here -as Irini, the owner of one of the two shops, tells me- there are campers who stay up to two months.” The taverns also function as groceries, shopping according to their customers needs, newspaper, cigarettes, two pounds of grapes …
Irini continues “Do you know that the beach is so called because it is frequented by seals? In fact just yesterday I saw two of them, which must be those that live in next beach”
To get there you must take the road from Leonidio to Plaka and turn right following signs for Tsitàlia. After just over 17km of climbing you reach a junction (see photo) with signs only in Greek. Keep left towards Pigadi and Fokianos and from here will begin the descent. After another 15km the asphalt ends and a dirt road begins, one more kilometer and you are on the beach. as our friend Gerry informed me, the road is now all paved up to the taverns on the beach. Just before the beach, there is a right turn leading to a church and soon after that you reach the southern end of the beach, where with a little luck you can find some shade to park.
BTW a little consideration: the nearest gas station is about 25 km, keep it in mind. One other thing: close to the taverns there is a phone booth, which is important given that mobile phones do not work.

The taverns, which are practically in the center of the beach, are open from May to October.
