Plytra (or Plitra) is an interesting stop halfway between Gythion and Neapolis. It’s a quiet village, which has as its attraction the submerged remains of the ancient Roman city of Asopos.

The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 365 BC Some of its remains can be seen from the coast, but certainly the best is to put a mask and flippers and go exploring, it is said that there are also the remains of a temple …
The town of Plytra is nice with a couple of beautiful beaches, one larger and noisier and the other more intimate and cute. There is the option to park close to the sea [N 36.68907, E 22.834758] or in the large parking lot in front of the harbor [N 36.688855, E 22.838159].
There are no-camping signs, but for those who just park there, there should be no problems. We spent a quiet night just next to the beach in front of the ruins, where there is also a shower and Wi-Fi.
About ten kilometers south of Plytra there is another great beach, Charakas, much wilder and suited for free overnight stay and windsurfing lovers 😉
Proceeding southward after another 4 kilometers you will see the villege of Archangelos. Beautiful name, a beautiful location, awesome seen from above, but when we approached I was not so impressed after all, maybe I was just not in the mood … However, in the area I choose Plytra!
