Corinth, where ships pass over bridges… (video)

corinto_bridge
corintoA unique engineering curiosity. The bridges at both ends of the Corinth Canal, to allow ships through, they dive and ships pass literally over them. Watching the procedure is at least hypnotic.

The idea is simple. The company that manages the channel wanted to build two bridges, one at each entrance of the channel, to facilitate the passage of cars and people. The problem that they managed to solve with this original system is that, in case of power or mechanical failure, the bridge, because of gravity, sinks anyway and does not interfere ships traffic, which have the highest priority. Then, a simple mechanism based on four-post lift, brings the bridge to the surface and restores the passage. Cute, isn’t it? In the short video that follows you can see Poseidonia bridge in action, which is in the North entrance of the channel, (on Loutraki.side).
