City of a hundred towers, the capital of the kingdom of Italy, home to one of the oldest Italian universities to which are related prestigious names such as Alessandro Volta, Carlo Rubbia, Ugo Foscolo, Carlo Goldoni. For centuries the center of historical events, Pavia is now a relatively quiet, young and little visited city, despite being located only 30 kilometers from Milan.

I am particularly attached to Pavia, the birthplace of my father, where I spent many summers and where I lived during my studies. Returning after more than ten years was a great pleasure to me, I did not found it particularly changed and I was happy to see that my reference points were all in their place. An underrated city from tourism point of view, that deserves to be visited, dedicating for it at least a full day.
PAvia has it all, a majestic covered bridge on Ticino river, a picturesque canal with locks system invented by Leonardo da Vinci …
… an imposing castle built by the Visconti family, now home to museums, exhibitions and other events …
… what remains of the famous hundred towers and the University of the studies, with its courtyards and galleries …
Below left the evidence of the passage of another famous character from the university: the greek national poet Dionysios Solomos.
The Duomo, below, in front of the Broletto, the actual town hall building, and some of the other churches which are another important heritage of the city.
Above and left Santa Maria del Carmine church (15th c.).
Below, San Francesco Grande (13th c.)
San Michele Maggiore (11th & 12th c.)
Above, the interior of San Pietro in ciel d’oro church, the ark and the crypt of St. Augustine.
Below, the interior of another church, but I cannot remember which one it was! Too many informations, only one head 😉
The interior of the legendary Fraschini theater and other views of the city. As for the taste, try the traditional Torta Paradiso by Vigoni and handmade ice cream by Pampanin.
For the stopover in Pavia, we parked along one of the roads that go out on the canal, near the cemetery [45.18464,9.17058], very quiet … except for the mosquitoes! In the photo on the side a convenient parking [45.19342,9.15299], near the center, which costs € 0.60 / hour during the day, except Saturdays and Sundays.
