As often happens in Greece, archeology and sea come together. In this case we make a first visit to what remains of the ancient Roman town Nicopolis, just past Preveza and then a stop on the sea, few kilometers further north, at Kanali.

Coming from Lefkada, we take the underwater tunnel to Preveza. Motorhomes pay € 5, well spent even if the tunnel is only a kilometer long, since they save a lot of kilometers to those who, like us, want to continue along the coast. Just outside Preveza, following the signs for Ioannena you begin to see the characteristics walls of Nicopolis.
Nicopolis, which means City of Victory, was founded in 31a.C. by Octavian, to celebrate the victory of Actium where he defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The main site [N 39.00965, E 20.73436] is open to the public from 8 to 15 and entry is free. The museum, which we have not visited, have an entrance fee of 3 €.
At about 500 meters from the site’s entrance you will find the Roman Odeon [N 39.01142, E 20.72935]. It is closed for renovation, but it is easy to clime over the fence 😉 You can get there on foot from the archaeological site, or you can move the vehicle to the parking lot 200 meters to the north and then walk from there.
Unfortunately, the big Roman theater, pictured below, which is a kilometer north [N 39.02358, E20.73626] is in a state of complete abandonment, but well-fenced and can not be visited.
We go back on the road to Igoumenitsa and after about six kilometers, we stop on the beach of Kanali [N 39.056651, E 20.699864].
Huge beach, with organized sections with bars offering umbrellas, beach chairs etc., alternating with stretches which are completely free. There’s something for all tastes! 🙂
