Plato’s Academy

ateneIf you belong to those who believe that the only evidence left from Plato was his books, maybe you should reconsider. The ruins of his philosophical school, the Academy, are still existing in a degraded neighborhood in the backyard of Athens historic center. Nobody seems to care though! To tell the truth, even I who was born, raised and have spent most of my life in Athens, I had never crossed the threshold of this ‘lost in the crowd’ archaeological site.

ateneIt goes without saying that you will visit it regardless of whether you like archeology or not. The New Acropolis Museum is ranking high in all listing of the best museums in the world, despite the fact that it is a thematic archaeological museum. In contrast with the other multicultural ‘stars’ as the Louvre, the Prado or the Hermitage, all exhibits in displays are from Acropolis hill, just across the road . It’s not only majestic, it’s controversial too!!!

ateneWhen we talk about museums in Athens, our mind goes directly to white marble statues, golden jewelry and bronze artifacts. If you are an archeology fan, get ready for quite a few kilometers of walking through the vestiges of the glorious past. But what if you are not? In this case you might consider visiting one (or maybe more) of the four museums dedicated to the Greek Folk Art,  all located in the old district of Plaka. They are definitely not crowded!
