We linger a little longer in the hinterland of Southern Euboea to discover more wonders hidden in the mountains. This time it was the turn of the enigmatic “dragon houses”. These megalithic, archaic constructions known as drakospita are scattered throughout the central and southern part of the island. We visited the group of Palli-Laka which is easily accessible from Styra and we’ve been fairly impressed!

Crete: Zakros and the Dead’s Gorge
Kato Zakros is definitely worth visiting although it is not quite ideal for overnight stay. It is highly recommended, however, for a day-long visit far from the tourist trail. This is really strange because a major archaeological site and an easily accessible gorge are nearby, in a distance of 500 m. from the picturesque, seaside village. Yet very few people visit the place. Who can ever know what is in the tourist mind?

Samaria Gorge, is one of the most popular destinations in Crete. The hike itself is not very difficult, especially once you leave behind the stretch of steep descent at the beginning of the trail, but the path is long (the second in Europe, 16km) and crowded (up to 1500 people per day), which makes it quite tiring. But there is also an alternative for the lazy ones…
