While thousands of tourists struggle to find a place to lay their towel in the world-famous beaches of West Crete (Balos, Elafonissi), on the opposite end of the island there is something strange (though marvelous) happening. The beaches of Xerokambos with their crystal clear, turquoise waters are crowd-free! Its beauty and tranquility make this remote area the appropriate place to spend a few days relaxing by the sea.

Crete: Moni Kapsa and Asprolithos
So far our journey in South Lassithi wasn’t something to be excited about. The greenhouses were alternating with raws of characterless “rooms for rent”, tavernas and various tourist shops. We left behind us Makrygialos, a former fishing village and now the most popular resort of the area, with a large feeling of disappointment about the effects of “all inclusive” tourism. Luckily the frustration didn’t last long (as you can see from the photo above).
Crete: Around Ierapetra
We decided to leave “our shelter”, the peaceful and calm beach of Myrtos, hoping that the windstorm would be gone. It was not. As soon as we left behind us the last houses of Myrtos, we realized that the wind which we thought it had calmed down, just kept blowing. We chose to stick to our plan and continue further east; of course we had no clue about what would happen later in the evening.
