Perhaps it would be difficult to think of Kalavryta as a ‘not to be missed’ tourist destination. Still, this pleasant mountain town is quite popular among both Greeks and foreignner tourists. Key facts : it is the last stop of Odontotos rack railway and a ‘sacred’ place associated with the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman occupation and the resistance to Nazism. Add to this that it is a good starting point to explore the surroundings.

Diakopto and Mega Spileon
We found a nice stopover point next to Diakopto beach which is perfect for sleeping, if you want to take the Odontotos train early in the morning, but also if you come from or go to Patras located less than 70 kilometers from there. We instead decided to head towards the small town of Kalavrita so we started driving uphill. About halfway, next to Zachlorou train station, we made a stop to visit the impressive monastery of Mega Spileo.
Vouraikos Gorge Hike
After a long and rainy winter, the hiking season is back! For our first walking tour we visited the gorge of Vouraikos or Voraikos which is located in the north side of Peloponesse, 63 km from Patras and 170 km from Athens. This hike is part of the European path E-4 and it coincides with the track of Odontotos, the railway with the toothed rack rail that connects Diakofto (Diakopto) with Kalavryta.
