A beautiful beach, appreciated also by the turtles to lay their eggs. A mysterious shipwreck on the coast, abandoned for more than thirty years. An open area with trees where you can stay overnight. A perfect stopover between Mani and eastern Peloponnese, 5km from Gythio.

he legend says that it is a smugglers’ ship that pursued by the Coast Guard, preferred silting up to allow the crew to escape, leaving the load of cigarettes they were carrying. There are also other versions of the story, but nothing is sure, not even the date, maybe it happened in 1977, others say sooner, others later. In short, a good mystery, which fits well to the feeling you get when you find yourself in front of the wreck.
The beach is sandy and is visited by Caretta Caretta, which lay their eggs there. I have not seen the turtles, but in the morning on the beach there were footprints that could very well be of a turtle.
On the north side of the beach, the side of the bar-restaurant, there is a stream getting out to the sea, that is able to create a thin layer of cold water on the surface of the sea, that is still hot just under it … a strange effect 🙂
In the open space in front of the venue there are some trees and is a great place to stop for the night.
The beach is called Glyfada, even though it is known as the beach of the shipwreck ( navà yio ).
